Product care
All of my products are coated with a food-safe finish that protects the wood and brings out its natural grain. Regular maintenance is necessary to keep the wood hydrated, prevent cracking, and maintain that smooth feel.
After each use, clean wood items with hot, soapy water, then wipe dry with a cloth and allow them to air dry completely. Do not soak wood items or leave them sitting in water. Never put wood products in the dishwasher, as the heat, detergents, and drying cycle can cause warping, cracking, and splintering. This is especially important for cutting boards made of multiple pieces of wood glued together, as the glue will not hold up over time.
Keep wood items away from direct heat sources like stovetops, ovens, or radiators, as prolonged heat can dry the wood unevenly and lead to cracking.
When storing cutting boards, place them upright or on edge when possible to allow even airflow and reduce the chance of warping.
Regular maintenance
Items that see regular use benefit from light maintenance every few months. During winter or in dry climates, more frequent care may be needed. You will know it is time when the surface starts to look dull, feels dry or slightly rough, or when water no longer beads up and instead soaks into the wood.
When this happens, apply a thin, even coat of oil or wax to all surfaces, including edges and undersides. Let it absorb, then wipe off any excess. This restores moisture, protects the wood, and keeps the surface smooth and resilient.
Knife marks and light surface wear are normal signs of use and do not affect performance. Over time, surfaces can be refreshed with light sanding followed by re-oiling if desired.
My wood conditioner is a special food safe blend of mineral oil, beeswax, and a bit of coconut oil, and it's what I finish every piece with before it leaves the shop.
The wax creates an extra protective barrier to help with water resistance and it's also what gives the wood that smooth, polished look and feel.
Mineral oil can also be used on its own for routine maintenance. Avoid edible oils like olive, vegetable, or nut oils, as they can oxidize over time and develop unpleasant odors and potentially become rancid.
